Days Fourteen & Fifteen

Forest Fires

On Wednesday we had a lazy day in the garden (gardening, painting, washing, ironing!) and in the pool. During the day we saw one of Spain´s fire-fighting planes fly over. The last time we were here there had been fires nearer to Marbella (20 mins away) and I saw planes flying over the bay (see pictures below). Most residents have a special App on their phone to check out possible fires; but this time there was no warning. However, sometimes roads are closed and the App is useful.

Caminito del Rey

On Thursday we drove to the famous walk called Caminito del Rey. This lies about an hour north of Fuengirola and 40 minutes from Malaga. A deep canyon through which the river flows, a railway was built in the 1800s and then it was decided to adapt the flow to provide hydro-electric power. After inaugerating a walk in the 1920s (opened by the King, hence del Rey) and extensive updating about ten years ago, it is a fantastic walk consisting of three main sections. First, there is the choice of a 2.7 or a 1.5 km walk through the forest; then you enter the real walk and have just over one kilometer high above the river; followed by 2 km or so to the end (it is one-way only!). A bus shuttle brings you back to your car. One of those features you should not miss!
